Pronunciation: JER-zē/DE-vil

The Jersey Devil (JER-zē/DE-vil) is a legendary creature said to inhabit the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey. The Jersey Devil is a kangaroo-like creature with the head of a goat, leathery bat-like wings, horns, small arms with clawed hands, cloven hooves, and a forked tail. It has been reported to move quickly and often is described as emitting a blood-curdling scream.

The Lenape tribes called the area where the Devil is found "Popuessing" meaning "place of the dragon." The Swedish explorers later named it "Drake Kill" ("drake" being a word for dragon, and "kill" meaning channel or arm of the sea (river, stream, etc. in Dutch).

The Jersey Devil is, in fact, a drake: a small dragon. It is centuries old and seems to be the only member of its species. It is speculated that there used to be a race of dragons native to the Americas, all of which went extinct some time ago, except for the Jersey Devil. However, no evidence has been brought forward to confirm this theory. It is still considered a cryptozoological fact that there are no species of dragon native to the Americas.

The Jersey Devil is quite intelligent and magi can, and have, communicated with it. However, as its motives are unknown and it is quick to anger (and quite deadly), the number of people who have survived conversation with the Jersey Devil is fewer than 15.

The Jersey Devil is capable of flight and has great skill at moving unseen through the treetops. It can see in perfect darkness, although using this power causes its eyes to glow red. The scream of the Jersey Devil can cause bleeding from the ears and eyes, rupturing of the eardrums, and, in some cases, permanent deafness. The Jersey Devil can also breathe flame, although it seems to be rarely willing to do so.

The Jersey Devil lives in a small cave in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey, which is located in Destiny Province. It has enchanted the cave so that Mundanes cannot find it.

The exact biology of the Jersey Devil is unknown, but it is presumed to have a biology similar to the drakes of Europe and Asia.

The Jersey Devil is omnivorous but subsists mostly on livestock and pets.

Magical Uses

The Jersey Devil is magical in nature, and it is presumed that uses for its organs and body-parts would be the same as those in its European cousins. On rare occasions, powerful wands with great affinities for offensive and ritual magic have been crafted using parts that have been given to a wizard by the Jersey Devil, often becoming prized family heirlooms.

Do not taunt the Jersey Devil. Do not compliment the Jersey Devil. Do not laugh in the presence of the Jersey Devil. Do not fart in the presence of the Jersey Devil. If you are carrying food, give every last bit of what you have to the Jersey Devil if it asks, holding nothing back. If the Jersey Devil demands food that you do not have, immediately offer to bring it what it wants. Do not break this promise to the Jersey Devil, but rather than returning directly with the promised items, simply leave the package where it can be found. At all times, remember that your goal is to escape the Jersey Devil alive.
